ESUT Gains NUC Approval for Open and Distance Learning


The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence Open and Distance Learning programmes. The university can now operate a B.Sc. Economics programme through an ICT Enabled Supported Blended Learning model, complying with the requirements for running Open and Distance Learning programmes in Nigerian Universities.




In a significant development, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to begin its Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes. This stride marks a significant milestone in ESUT’s commitment to expanding its academic reach and offering flexible education alternatives to students.

A Welcome Development

The approval came in a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the University. The letter stated, “I am pleased to inform the Vice-Chancellor that the Commission has given approval to the proposed Enugu State University of Science and Technology Open and Distance Learning Centre, Enugu State to commence academic activities.”

This followed a thorough validation process carried out by a Panel that visited the proposed Centre from 17th to 20th May 2023. The approval reflects the NUC’s confidence in ESUT’s readiness to deliver quality education through its ODL Centre.
Starting with B.Sc. Economics

The NUC’s approval allows ESUT to commence operations with the B.Sc. Economics programme only, employing the ICT Enabled Supported Blended Learning model under the Open and Distance Learning mode of delivery.

This programme’s choice aligns with ESUT’s vision to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge to thrive in today’s dynamic and globalized economic environment.
Compliance and Continuous Improvement

The NUC has urged the university to ensure total compliance with the requirements for running ODL programmes in Nigerian Universities. The Commission also emphasized the need for the University to effect the recommendations made by the Panel in the attached Technical Report.

The addition of new programmes will be on a programme-by-programme basis and will require pre-assessment and approval by the NUC. The University has been reminded that there will be periodic monitoring of the Centre to ensure adherence to acceptable best practices.
Expanding Educational Horizons

The introduction of the Open and Distance Learning programmes at ESUT heralds a new era in the institution’s academic delivery. It not only expands the University’s academic offerings but also opens up opportunities for students who may be unable to participate in traditional on-campus learning.
