Importance of the Energy Industry
The energy industry plays a crucial role in economic development, and graduates with relevant qualifications are instrumental in driving this sector. Established in 2011, the Centre for Petroleum Geosciences (CPG) serves as a Centre of Excellence, addressing the geoscience skill requirements of the petroleum industry. The MSc in Petroleum Geosciences programme is designed to support the oil and gas industry by providing students with the knowledge and practical skills needed for petroleum exploration.
Programme Structure and Duration
The academic programme for postgraduate studies is developed in collaboration with industry experts and delivered by experienced faculty and professionals from the petroleum sector. Courses are offered in modules, covering general, core, practical, and field training aspects.

Mode of Study and Examination
The study mode is a modular hybrid, combining onsite and online learning. Students must complete all taught courses, field/laboratory work, seminars, and projects. Examinations are conducted both onsite and online at the end of each module.Full-time: Onsite with real-time online video conferencing (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Part-time: Real-time online (Monday to Friday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.); weekends onsite (Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Instruction is provided by faculty from universities and experts from the oil and gas industry, ensuring a rich learning experience.
Admission Requirements
Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Petroleum GeosciencesFirst degree holders from recognised universities with a minimum CGPA of 1.50 on a 5-point scale or Higher National Diploma holders with at least Upper Credit in relevant fields such as Petroleum Geosciences, Geology, Geophysics, and related disciplines.
Higher National Diploma holders with a minimum of Lower Credit and relevant experience in the oil and gas industry.
Nigerian candidates must possess NYSC discharge certificates.
Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Green Energy Geosciences and Asset ManagementFirst degree or Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) holders in Sciences, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Management with relevant industry experience.
Master of Science (MSc) in Petroleum GeosciencesFirst degree holders with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale or PGD holders with a minimum of Credit in relevant fields.
PGD holders with a minimum of Merit and relevant industry experience.
Master of Science (MSc) in Green Energy Geosciences and Asset ManagementFirst degree or PGD (Credit) holders in relevant fields with three years of industry experience.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Petroleum GeosciencesMaster’s degree holders with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale in relevant fields and industry experience.
Application Fee
The application fee is twenty-five thousand naira (N25,000.00) for Nigerian applicants and USD65 for international applicants. Payments can be made online to the Centre for Petroleum Geosciences through Remita.

University of Port Harcourt Payment Portal.
Click on “miscellaneous & other payments”.
Select the relevant service/purpose.
Enter the required amount.
Fill in your details (name, email, phone number, etc.).
Create a payment slip and print it or copy the RRR number.
Proceed to any bank branch for payment or click “pay via Remita” for online payment.

CPG website or in person/courier to the Admission Officer, Centre for Petroleum Geosciences, University of Port Harcourt.
